Marriott Resort and Spa to operate another resort in Sarawak

The Marriott Resort and Spa will operate another resort in the State when it takes over the management of the Royal Mulu Resort in Mulu, Miri next year.

Complementing the company’s first property in Sarawak, the Miri Marriott Resort and Spa, works on the renovation and refurbishing of Marriott’s next resort will start soon.

Royal Mulu Resort, a three-star property with 880 rooms, is situated on the fringe of a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Gunung Mulu National Nark with its world-famous caves.

 
Borneo Convention Centre Kuching Opening in October

The Borneo Convention Centre Kuching (BCCK) is scheduled to open for business in October. Located at Kuching Isthmus about 5km from downtown Kuching, the BCCK is the first purpose-built international-class convention centre.

All meeting facilities are located on the same level. The functionally designed centre is able to accommodate 5,000 people at one time in the Grand Hall and 14 meeting rooms.

Other facilities at the centre include a business centre, media room and restaurant. The spacious complex is equipped with state-of-the-art equipment to cater for every type of conferences, exhibitions and events.

To celebrate its opening, BCCK is offering attractive packages for events scheduled for the period between September 30 and December 30, 2009.  The offer is open to event organizers in Malaysia and Singapore.

KAPIT, Oct 28 (Bernama) -- For Information Minister Datuk Ahmad Shabery Cheek, his visit to Kapit was specifically to launch the national-level "Layar Bestari" -- an Information Department mobile cinema for the rural people -- at the town square here on Monday night.

But Kapit also had its own "cinema" to show to the minister and after taking a three-hour ride on the modern double-decker "Sarawak Boleh" express boat along the Rajang River, Ahmad Shabery was all praise for the journey and the town.

"We have now another agenda at the Information Ministry, that is to promote Kapit as a tourist destination.

USM Researchers Find Prehistoric Human Skeletons In Gua Hitam Hitam, Sarawak

PENANG, Sept 18 -- A research team from Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) has discovered eight prehistoric human skeletons, believed to be more than 2,000 years old, in Gua Kain Hitam, Sarawak, which discovery proves the existence of human beings in the area during the Neolithic age.

Chief Researcher and lecturer at the USM's Centre for Archaeological Research Malaysia (PPAM) Prof Madya Stephen Chia believed there were relations between the findings at Gua Kain Hitam with the skeletons, believed to be more than 40,000 years old, which were found at Gua Niah, also in Sarawak, 53 years ago.

"The skeletons, with most of the parts, from head to toe complete, are found since 2007. They are found in a straight position and in a highly decomposed state with most of the bones broken," he told a press conference here today.

Sarawak-Brunei-Sabah Inter-State Bus Service To Be Launched

PUTRAJAYA, July 31 (Bernama) -- A maiden inter-state commercial bus service involving the Miri, Bandar Seri Begawan and Kota Kinabalu routes will be launched in September to facilitate easier movement of people and goods in Malaysia and Brunei Darussalam.

Transport Minister Datuk Ong Tee Keat said the launch of the service was under the Brunei, Indonesia, Malaysia and the Philippines East Asean Growth Area (BIMP-EAGA) Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on Cross-Border Movement of Commercial Buses and Coaches which was signed last year.

He said the standard operating procedures (SOP) for the operation of commercial buses and coaches in that route were being finalised.

SANDAKAN, June 1 (Bernama) -- Sabah, famous for its vast forest treasures and its landscape, is to host the inaugural Malaysian Rainforest Flora and Fauna Festival in August next year.

The Prime Minister's wife, Datin Seri Jeanne Abdullah, who is also the Malaysian Lansdscape Advisory Panel chairman, said the Rainforest Discovery Centre (RDC) in Sepilok here has been picked as the location of the biennial festival.

She said the month-long festival would promote Malaysia and its tropical rainforest on the international tourism map.

Sarawak To Assist Potential Investors Keen To Venture In SCORE

KUCHING -- Sarawak will assist and facilitate potential investors, keen to form synergistic clusters with related heavy industries, in gigantic projects being implemented under the Sarawak Corridor Of Renewable Energy (SCORE), deputy chief minister Tan Sri Dr George Chan said Wednesday.

Dr Chan, who is also State Industrial Development Minister, said his ministry was working closely with the State Planning Unit, Bintulu Port Authority, other relevant agencies and the private sector to facilitate the eight potential big foreign direct investors currently keen to invest on various types of industries at SCORE.
