If Royal Belum State Park in Perak was a Hollywood production, it would be the mother of all prequels. At 130-million-years-old, it is the world’s oldest forest — older than the forests of Amazon and Congo.

As for its inhabitants, it — figuratively! — has a cast of thousands in the form of flora and fauna — 3,000 species of flowering plants; 274 species of birds, more than 100 species of mammals; 168 species of butterflies, and a host of other terrestrial and aquatic life forms.

But Royal Belum is only half the story. The other half is the Temenggor Forest Reserve. Together, these 300,0000 hectares of forest, located next to each other, make up the Belum-Temenggor Rainforest Complex (BTR).
