Le Tour de Langkawi 2009
More winners with shorter route 12/12/2008 A shorter 14th edition of Le Tour de Langkawi (LTdL) promises a higher turnover of jersey holders, with all-rounders looking good to dominate the race. The LTdL, still ensured the highest 2.HC grade by the International Cycling Union (UCI), will run its shortest ever route, covering a total of 1,029.9 kilometres over seven stages on Feb 9-15. The route launch at the Sports Ministry yesterday provided an optimistic view on what critics will see as an improved, compact version of the race that promises to pile the pressure on a bigger mix of riders in a 120-strong peloton made up of 20 teams. Undulations via Stage One from Putrajaya to Senawang will see the mountains classification up for grabs right from the start, throwing a sense of wide-openness into the picture, with sprinters' teams not guaranteed a bunched sprint finish. Tricky categorised climbs are sprinkled throughout the six stages prior to the traditional final stage, the Kuala Lumpur Criterium on Feb 15. The queen stage, the climb to the top of Genting Highlands makes a return this time around, after being replaced by Fraser's Hill this year, but via a short 95.6km route on the fifth day from Petaling Jaya. A shortened Tour painted a picture of an effect of the financial crisis, but LTdL chief operating officer Datuk Naim Mohamad believes the Tour this time around will provide enough grounds for an exciting race. "It is a shorter route, but I cannot accept any notion that this is going to be a simpler race. We've improved on areas where we've got negative feedback, like having virtually no long transfers between stages," said Naim at the route launch yesterday. The teams competing in the 14th edition of LTdL are yet to be finalised, but Naim indicated that out of the 20 teams, at least 10 contesting the three Grand Tours (GTs) will be present. Malaysia will likely field three teams -- the national team, MCF Cycling Team and Le Tua. THE ROUTE -- Stage One (Feb 9): 135km from Putrajaya to Senawang; Stage Two (Feb 10): 161.7km from Senawang to Malacca; Stage Three (Feb 11): 186.6km Malacca loop; Stage Four (Feb 12): 222.2km from Malacca to Bangi; Stage Five (Feb 13): 95.6km from Petaling Jaya to Genting Highlands; Stage Six (Feb 14): 148.4km from Batang Kali to Shah Alam; Stage Seven (Feb 15): 80.4km Kuala Lumpur Criterium. The sooner the better. We would book right now! le Tour de Langkawi 2009 - Provisional Start List Malaysian stage race reflects the increasingly international character and growth of professional cycling - Riders competing from 35 Nations breaks previous record. Malaysia will once again top the field of Le Tour de Langkawi with 15 local riders taking part in the race on the start line at Putrajaya, the home of the Malaysian government, on February 9. But the event appears more international than ever despite the reduction of the number of participating teams from 25 in 2008 to 20 this year. One year ago, it was already a record number of 30 nations lined up but the provisional start list for the 14th edition of the race boasts an exceptional number of riders hailing from 35 different countries and five continents to compete on Malaysian soil.

It is another big ask of Anuar Manan (pic) as the national team begin their final turn towards Le Tour de Langkawi (LTdL) on Feb 9-15.
He is the biggest name Malaysia will put forward in the race and the 23-year old Anuar knows it. Yet the Terengganu-born has his eyes firmly on the task ahead.
"My personal target is still to win a stage and then look at taking the green jersey (points classification)," said Anuar, who is with the national team at their final training camp in Genting Highlands.
"Looking at the route profile, this is not an easy Tour although it is just seven stages. It won't be easy for the sprinters.
"There are climbs everyday and most of the stages go through undulating terrain. That makes it difficult to keep it all together for bunch sprint finishes."
Anuar, then riding for the Le Tua Cycling Team, made history last year when he became the first Malaysian to lead LTdL's points classification, when he just missed out on a stage win on the third day, finishing second to Seoul City's Lee Won Jae.
Anuar ended last year's Tour with no less than the best ever performance by a Malaysian rider, but it is a whole new picture with the national team this time around.

LE TOUR DE LANGKAWI 2009
KUALA LUMPUR: National cyclist Anuar Manan, competing in the 2009 Le Tour de Langkawi (LTdL) with the national team for the first time, hopes to make a bigger impact than last year.
Anuar, winner of the blue jersey (Sprint) at two stages in the 2008 LTdL, representing Le Tua cycling team, joined the national team last month and has since been training together with his new teammates under coach Jamaluddin Omar.
“I and my former teammate Ahmad Haidar Anuawar are together in the team and we are getting acquainted with the rest of the team members.
“My main aim is to do better than the two stage wins,” said the cyclist from Kuala Ibai, Terengganu.
In the 13th edition held early this year, Anuar, 22, created history by becoming the first Malaysian to wear the Blue jersey for the third and fourth stages after winning the Sprint stages.

A compact field with some of the world’s best teams
The 2009 Le Tour de Langkawi will feature 20 teams from February 9 to 15, starting in Putrajaya, the home of Malaysian government, and finishing in the country’s capital Kuala Lumpur with the traditional criterium at Dataran Merdeka.
“The selection of the teams has been the hardest ever”, said the Chief Operating Officer Datuk Naim Mohamad. “We have received almost 50 bids from different teams from all over the world. It means the 7 days race format suits more teams than before. With a more compact field, we expect an even more challenging race.” As usual, the five continents will be competing in Malaysia for Asia’s biggest stage race. |

KUALA LUMPUR -- Le Tua cycling team, preparing for the 2009 Le Tour de Langkawi (LTdL) from Feb 9-15, face their first test without its two pillars, Anuar Manan and Ahmad Haidar Anuawar.
Anuar and Ahmad Haidar who had helped raise the profile of Le Tua, have since joined the national team to compete in the 'hors classe' LTdL this year.
"Facing the challenge ahead without the duo is going to be very difficult but we are still confident of winning at least one of the seven stages contested," Le Tua team manager Shukor Yassin told Bernama here Sunday.
Though Le Tua are certain to miss their services, Shukor was not disappointed with the decision of the duo to join the national team because the initial objective of forming Le Tua was to groom talented cyclist for the country.
