Chinese women top list of foreign prostitutes detained in Malaysia |
|
Kuala Lumpur - Chinese women topped the list of foreign prostitutes arrested in Malaysia throughout 2008, followed by Indonesian nationals, a news report said Saturday. A total of 4,496 Chinese women were detained during anti-vice raids conducted nationwide.
Police also nabbed 1,389 Indonesian women, 1,049 Thai nationals, 1,090 Filipinas and 512 women from Vietnam, all of whom were believed to be working as prostitutes in entertainment outlets and budget hotels, Bakri Zinin, the director of criminal investigations, was quoted as saying by the New Straits Times daily.
Bakri said the police relied heavily on tip-offs from the public in reporting "immoral activities," adding that many of the women entered the country on social visas. He said a newly-formed anti-trafficking unit has also successfully rescued 39 foreign nationals found to have been forced to work as prostitutes.
"These women, aged between 18 and 25, came here lured by the promise of jobs like shop assistants, but were instead forced into vice by their bogus agents," said Bakri. He said the victims managed to seek help from sympathetic members of the public, who would then alert police.
Prostitution is illegal in Malaysia. The sentence for those found guilty of soliciting is a fine of up to 2,000 ringgit (540 dollars) and a one-year jail term. Foreigners are deported.

Boat Ambulance - To Ferry Patients From Langkawi To Kedah, Penang |
|
A "Boat Ambulance" service would start operations on April 1, to ferry patients who are transferred from Langkawi to hospitals in Kedah or Penang said deputy Health Minister Datuk Dr Abdul Latiff Ahmad.
He said the special service, to be provided by the Marine Department, who will buy and maintain a boat that would be equipped with the same emergency equipments available on a normal ambulance.
"When the special service starts operations, it would help eliminate the problem of patients having to wait for normal ferry service when being transferred to hospitals in Kedah or Penang," he said after launching the Federal Territory celebrations for World Kidney Day 2009, here Thursday.

Rare Flower Found In Lanjak Entimau |
|
KUCHING - A scientific expedition to an unexplored eastern part of Sarawak's Lanjak Entimau Wildlife Sanctuary (LEWS) last June, discovered a new species of the rare Rhizanthes (Rafflesiaceae), locally known as jambu lipa.
According to findings by researchers Donna Jackson and Kamarudin Mat-Salleh of the Universiti Putra Malaysia, Bintulu Campus, the large flower which has 16 tail-like appendages measuring 8.5cm long is unique because it mimics stinking rotting flesh when in fragance, thus helping to attract flies which pollinate it.
The plant has outstanding features, including its orange-white batik pattern halfway through every tepal (outer part of the flower), with dense hair covering its entire inner side.
It was found approximately 500 to 800 metres from the survey strip along Sungai Joh and Sungai Layak, a primary riverine forest.

Kertih Airport Reopens To Commercial Flights |
|
KERTIH -- After nearly 20 years, Kertih Airport that has been serving oil company workers at oilrigs has reopened to commercial flights.
Menteri Besar Datuk Ahmad Said said the airport used to serve commercial flights by Pelangi Air in the 1980s but were stopped when the airline ceased operation.
"The reopening of Kertih airport means that Terengganu now has two airports to boost the tourism sector, the backbone of the state's economy, particularly in the south from Dungun until Kemaman.
"As such, passengers going to Kemaman and Dungun need not alight at Kuantan and Kuala Terengganu as they will land at Kertih thus saving time and cost," he said after receiving 72 passengers on board the first Firefly flight from Subang Airport.
